Guild Wars 2 Item Upgrade
The stats of an item can be enhanced by upgrading it, also referred to as "upping". Each upgrade increment boosts the stat linearly.
Players can recycle up to six items at a time to gain an indicator of the level of the item's upgraded components. The cost of recycling an item scales with its rarity and level.
Upgrade components
In Guild Wars 2, an item upgrade is a way to increase the stats on your weapon and armor. This can be achieved by a variety of methods such as using upgrade components or increasing the rarity of an item or its mark level. A lot of items can be reforged to boost their stats.
You can purchase upgradeable items throughout the game. They are available all over the world as well as rewards for missions. They can also be created by players. The primary method to upgrade equipment is by making use of upgrade components which are items that can be slotted into equipment. Most equipment comes with upgrade slots, and many require a certain level of upgrade. Certain upgrade components offer specific bonuses, while others offer an overall bonus.

Almost all weapons can be upgraded with a prefix upgrade for example, an insignia or a rune. Many can be upgraded using an upgrade suffix. There are some exceptions, however. the noninscribable wands, foci and shields from the Prophecies and Factions campaigns, which are not upgradeable with any kinds of mods.
Glyphs
Glyphs can be used to communicate visual information. They animate to capture the viewer's attention and spur interest in the brain. The animation of glyphs resembles the body language and makes them more effective in conveying a linguistic barrier-crossing message. Glyphs can also enhance the retention of the message by triggering an emotional connection in the brain.
Each glyph increases a stat's value by a certain range. This is shown on the item, when you open it in the Glyph Storage. This is not the exact amount at which glyphs can improve the stat, but rather the maximum amount it can increase a stat. The actual value of the glyph is determined by the tier and quality of the item you're enchanting it to.
The majority of upgrade components installed into items cannot be removed or replaced without removing them, with the exception of legendary equipment and upgrades. If, however, you have a non-useful rune or glyph that hasn't yet been applied to your equipment, you can transfer it to a different piece equipment by using the upgrade Glyphs context menu within the Glyphs panel. This will create an Glyph Set that includes the selected glyph.
If you wish to remove a glyph from a piece of then you'll need to salvage it with an Black Lion Salvage Kit or Ascended Salvage Tool. The item where the glyph is installed will be destroyed, however the upgraded item can be salvaged with the glyph shards.

Rerolled items can be recycled by pressing the "upgrade" button, which changes the layout of the item window and allows up to six items to be selected to recycle. The level gauge is boosted by recycling an item. The amount is determined by the item's rarity and its level, therefore higher-level items are more useful to recycle than lower-level ones.
In addition to tokens for rerolls players can also use Star Remnants and Reroll Tokens to reroll the traits of a weapon in an upgraded unit. Rerolls are based on a % chance of a weapon's traits.
